The Lille Independent Winegrowers Wine Fair brings France's small estate producers together under one roof at Lille Grand Palais. There is no middleman here: growers pour their own bottles, tell you which slope the grapes came from and sell direct from the stand. Every booth is built to the same size and appellations are deliberately shuffled, so a Burgundy pinot sits a few metres from an Alsace riesling or a Loire sauvignon. Both trade buyers and everyday drinkers walk the same aisles. Admission includes a tasting glass you keep for the whole visit, and regulars use the fair's website beforehand to build a personal route through their favourite estates. Short, informal tastings happen continuously, with growers talking through vintages, soils and cellar techniques. The fair is one stop on the annual tour run by the Confédération des Vignerons Indépendants across France and Germany. After Clermont-Ferrand, Hamburg, Lyon and Reims, Lille closes the autumn circuit for northern France. Many of the estates exhibiting do not sell through supermarkets. Travellers coming from outside the region can stay in central Lille: the venue sits next to the Euralille district, within walking distance or a couple of metro stops from most hotels.
