The Reims edition of the Vignerons Indépendants wine fair returns to the Parc des Expositions Henri Farman for its 34th outing, one of the most anticipated dates on eastern France's wine calendar. Across four days, more than 300 independent estates pour their latest vintages for casual drinkers and trade buyers alike, in a set-up where every stand is identical and appellations sit side by side so each grower gets equal billing. Unlike a conventional trade show, the person behind the counter is the winemaker: the one who farms the plot, makes the wine and pours the glass. Admission includes a tasting glass, and visitors can buy bottles on the spot with no middlemen, making this one of the country's biggest direct-sales wine events. Champagne, Burgundy, the Loire, the Rhône, Alsace, Bordeaux and the Languedoc all share the same hall, so a single afternoon is enough to work through the breadth of French terroir. The fair runs annually and pulls in locals as well as weekenders from Paris and neighbouring Belgium. Travellers coming from further afield will find that staying in central Reims makes it easy to pair the fair with a tour of the grandes maisons de champagne, the Gothic cathedral and the city's historic cellars, all a short hop from the exhibition grounds.
